Doing so would eliminate any possibility of recovering the data in the sector. In this case the location of the sector is noted by the drive but it is not replaced. Things are more complicated when a read error occurs. The problem is that there are only a limited number of spare sectors available and when that number is reached no more errors can be repaired. This is done internally by the drive and even the OS is not aware that the error occurred. When an error occurs when a sector is written it will be immediately replaced. Bad sector mapping is done internally by the drive but can be triggered by external events. ![]()
